When is the best time of year to visit the Indian Ocean?
BetweenNovember and April for the Maldives, September to May for Mauritius and the Seychelles are good year-round with the best visibility for diving in April-May and October-November
How safe are the waters for swimming?
resort beaches are generally safe. However, the open ocean can have strong currents, and tidal shifts can be significant, especially near reefs and passes. Always swim in designated areas, take local advice, and be aware of potential marine life
Is tipping expected in the resorts?
Yes, it is appreciated. While a 10% service charge is often automatically added to bills in high-end resorts, especially in the Maldives), tipping staff directly is customary and appreciated.
Are visas required for the popular Indian Ocean island nations?
Generally not for short stays. Most popular destinations (Maldives, Seychelles, Mauritius) grant a free Visitor's Permit/Visa-on-Arrival for up to 30 to 90 days to many nationalities, including NZ citizens
