Respectful dress is essential, particularly when visiting temples, mosques, or other religious sites, often requiring shoulders and knees to be covered for both men and women. Public displays of affection, touching a person's head, or pointing with your finger or foot can also be considered highly inappropriate in many regions.
Is tipping expected in Asia?
It varies dramatically. Tipping is often not customary and can even be politely refused or cause confusion in countries like Japan, South Korea, and Mainland China, where good service is a matter of professional pride. However, in Southeast Asia, countries such as Thailand and Vietnam, tipping guides, drivers, and restaurant staff is increasingly appreciated, especially in tourist areas.
What is the best way to travel between cities in Asia?
Try the high-speed rail (Japan, China, South Korea) and overnight buses or trains (Southeast Asia, India) are efficient and affordable, alternatives for regional travel.
Will my debit card work in Asia?
Yes, for purchases in large stores and hotels, as most NZ debit cards are linked to the Visa or Mastercard network. However, Asia is still a very cash-driven region. You will need cash for street food, local markets, small taxis, and rural areas
