Frequently asked questions about Africa.

Get your questions answered with our most FAQs, but if there’s something we haven’t covered, please get in touch.

When is the best time to go on a safari?
The "best" time depends entirely on what you want to see! Generally, the Dry Season (June to October) is peak safari time across East and Southern Africa. Water is scarce, forcing animals to congregate around permanent water sources, making them easier to spot. This period also includes the spectacular Great Migration river crossings in the Serengeti and Maasai Mara (typically July to October).

If you prefer lush scenery, baby animals, and fewer crowds, the Green Season (November to March) is ideal, though wildlife is more dispersed.

For first-timers, we often recommend the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, or the reserves in Botswana and South Africa's Kruger National Park for guaranteed sightings.
Is travel to Africa safe, and what precautions should I take?
This is our most common question, and the answer is a resounding yes! The vast majority of travelers experience safe, trouble-free trips. We only book destinations and operations that meet the highest international safety standards.

We suggest speaking to a travel health specialist 4-6 weeks before departure regarding necessary vaccinations you might need and as in any major city worldwide, be discreet with electronics and jewellery when in urban areas.
How do I handle money, currency, and tipping?
The currency situation varies by country.
South Africa: Uses the South African Rand (ZAR). Credit cards are widely accepted.

East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania): Local currencies (Kenyan Shilling/Tanzanian Shilling) are used, but US Dollars (USD) printed after 2006 are widely accepted for most tourist expenses, park fees, and tips.

Tipping: Tipping is customary and vital to the local economy. We provide detailed guidelines based on your itinerary, but generally budget for tipping your main safari guide, camp staff, and trackers.
What is a typical day like on a safari?
Safaris follow the rhythms of the animals, which means an early start!

Dawn (5:30 AM): Wake-up call, followed by tea/coffee and a light snack.

Morning Drive (6:00 AM - 10:00 AM): The best time for game viewing as predators are active before the heat sets in.

Brunch/Leisure (10:00 AM - 3:30 PM): Return to camp for a hearty brunch, relax by the pool, read, or take a guided bush walk while the animals rest.

Afternoon Drive (3:30 PM - Sunset): Head out again, often pausing for a traditional "Sundowner" drink as the sun dips below the horizon.

Dinner (7:30 PM): Return to camp, freshen up, and enjoy dinner, often shared with other guests around a campfire or in the main dining tent.
